*IThe imposing Moriche palm (Mauritia flexuosa) is characteristic of the Orinoco Delta. It provides a habitat for many species and plays an important ecological role. Its fruits are favoured by humans and animals. They are rich in vitamins A and C and are eaten fresh or made into juices. Its wood and leaves are used as building material for traditional pile dwellings. The fibres are used to make the robust ‘Hamacas de Moriche’, traditional hammocks that are valued for their durability.
