In Venezuela, the cashew nut is called Merey – a term that presumably goes back to the language of the indigenous Arawak or Carib peoples. The nutritious nut grows on wild trees and is a favourite snack. Its kernel is contained in a poisonous shell, which is traditionally carefully roasted.
