*The Açai berry is the fruit of a palm, which is native to the humid valleys and floodplains of the Amazon basin. The palm has several trunks and can reach up to 25 metres in height. The deep purple to black fruits hang in their thousands from long, highly branched inflorescences. Once a year, each stem of the cabbage palm bears up to six kilograms of fruit, which has to be laboriously harvested by hand.
